Who’s afraid of the McCann?

From left to right: Portuguese Prime-Minister, Mr. José Sócrates, Chairman of the Supreme Magistrates Council, Judge Noronha do Nascimento, head of the Public Prosecutor's Service, Mr. Pinto Monteiro and director of Policia Judiciária, Mr. Alípio Ribeiro

Clarence Mitchell, a former spin-doctor from British Government, is a liar. Nothing new, because this is an essential characteristic for somebody who has this kind of job. The most recent lie was published today. Mr. Clarence Mitchell told the Mirror “Kate and Gerry have consistently said they are willing to co-operate with Portuguese authorities and will continue to do so, regardless of who is in charge of the hunt for Madeleine."

The “debutant” - as Richard Branson called him - Portuguese lawyer Pinto de Abreu said exactly the opposite. So, one of them is a liar. I believe Mr. Pinto de Abreu told the truth, when he revealed that Kate McCann refused to answer several times, when questioned by Police. I don't believe Mr. Clarence Mitchell, because his job has been – and still is – not to tell the truth, but to try to create the idea that truth is what better serves the interest of his bosses, whoever they are.

But the most interesting statement of Mr. Clarence Mitchell, the once powerful head of Media Monitoring Unit, was on GMTV: “What (the McCann) want now is whoever takes over to refocus the inquiry onto finding Madeleine.”

Meaning, what the McCann want is that Portuguese Police forgets the evidence collected by a British Police special team, working with the two most valuable and efficient sniffer dogs of all police forces in UK – Keela and Eddie – at Praia da Luz.

What the McCann want, according to Clarence Mitchell, is that Portuguese Police start to pretend that it is a strong possibility that Madeleine McCann is alive – a theory that goes against the results of the analysis of the samples collected by the British Police special team at Praia da Luz - analysis done at Forensic Science Service, in Birmingham.

But Clarence Mitchell is doing his job. That's what is paid for, by the several British millionaires that are the financial supporters of the McCann. What I don't understand is why the answer for the challenges and threats coming from the McCann has been the silence, coming from the Portuguese Prime-Minister, Mr. José Sócrates, from the Chairman of the Supreme Magistrates Council, Judge Noronha do Nascimento, from the head of the Public Prosecutor's Service, Mr. Pinto Monteiro and from the director of Policia Judiciária, Mr. Alípio Ribeiro (pictured above...)

Are they afraid of the McCann? Are they afraid of who is behind the McCann? I can't believe they are. I can't accept they are. But I can't understand why they have been so silent, month after month of an amazing campaign of slur, slander, calumny, defamation and insult to all the institutions those persons represent: our Nation, our Judicial system, our Courts, our Public Prosecutor's Office and our Police.

I never heard a word of Mr. Alípio Ribeiro defending one of his men, Criminal Coordinator Gonçalo Amaral. He never had the courage to come forward and say that he trusted the man who was in the spotlight, the nº 1 target of British tabloid's journalists (*), people that behave like a pack of hyenas and have to lick each other for mutual reconnaissance, in order to avoid episodes of cannibalism.

When you are in command and you don't take care of your men, you risk to lose the battle. Because your men don't trust you. If you want to lead, you have to be the first to move forward and face the enemy. If you do that, your men will fight and die for you. But even if you stay in the comfort and cosiness of your command post, at the top of your ivory tower, while your men are struggling in the trenches, you can be sure they will do their job. They have a mission and a duty, and that's more important than the man that, by accident, happens to be their commander. A man that never had his shoes in the mud, never smelled a rotten body, never heard the noise of bullets passing by.

But when those men finish their job, they will come for you. They will ask you where you have been, when they needed you. Why you left them alone. They will demand answers. Hope you have a good one. You will need it. You and all the others that have been in such a comfortable silence, until now, as if you have nothing to do with what is going on at Praia da Luz.

Paulo Reis

(*) Mr. Grant Hodgson, from the Mirror, is a man that considers himself a journalist – an obvious mistake. He calls me with regularity, like many other British journalists – and I wouldn’t mention their names, as most of them are good professionals. And we just talk, between journalists, about the last gossips, information, recente news and so on.

Some of them ask me for help in clarifying aspects of the Portuguese legal system, others want more details about news that were published in the Portuguese Press. A few of them proposed me money in exchange for information and other usual unethical procedures, quite common among British tabloid journalists. Brendan de Beer, who works for a English language publication in Algarve, once called me asking who where my sources in the Police...

Last time Mr. Hodgson called me, he asked my opinion about the picture of Madeleine, in Morocco. I reminded him of the many sightings in Malta and I told him that everybody should be careful with those sightings. I gave him an example: the president of Portuguese Detectives Union told, during a TV program, on September 11, that Polícia Judiciária had to investigate and send teams to 252 different places where aleged sightings of Madeleine have been reported, only in Portugal, between May 3 and September 11. “Amazing” - he said.

And what did this "journalist" wrote, next day? He wrote this piece of fake, misleading and manipulated information: “The Sunday Mirror has discovered that 252 possible tip-offs about the four-year-old have been reported to Amaral, any one of which might just lead to her being traced. But the vast majority have not even been checked.

Paulo Perhaps the opposite is true too, that the investigation has been a total shambles, reported leads have been ignored and that the Chief Investigator was totally incorrect in leaking details to the press and in looking for a scapegoat in the form of The McCanns.

Perhaps this is what the Portuguese are scared of having revealed to the outside world.

Hi Paulo,
Well written!
It’s true that the UK Press really are a disgrace ,you only have to visit one of the many forums of these so called National papers just 2 see what the bloggers are really saying about them!
Their Editors obviously don’t seem to care, but wonder how they will feel when sales start to decline!
If they think they can treat the UK public like fools with their one sided journalism, then sorry to say they are in for one big surprise.
It’s actually bloggers like myself on these forums that are asking questions that the papers should be asking on any other case they would be all over it, but for some strange reason in this story they aren’t!
Most people in the UK don’t think of the Portuguese Police as the keystone cops as some papers will have us believe though I’m certain that’s what the McCann camp would like us to think.
It’s a scandal that the hierarchy in Portuguese law and government isn’t supporting the Portuguese Police assigned to this case as they should.
A word of encouragement from the powers that be to the Police assigned to this case goes a long way and costs nothing!
Take Care,

Iain

i am british and live in britain. i do not agree with all the people that appear to be against the PJ. the PJ are doing their job and everyone should respect that. if the british police said they had evidence to suggest that the poarents were involed in maddys dissappearence then the british people would prob have a different opinion on the mccanns. the only thing that leads to this frustration from all sides is their secrecy law. it would be nice to hear the FACTS on this case............would love amaral to sell his story!
i think the mccanns had something to do with the night of may 3rd, and i have said that from the moment they stepped out on camera, i just wish the papers would stop writing lies and speculation, and the pro mccanns would leave off the PJ!!!!!!!!!!!

Bom trabalho jornalistico, Paulo, Parabéns.
Tenho muita pena que grande parte dos portugueses não o possam ler.

Obrigada

Hi Paulo

You are stating the sniffer dogs findings in a form of cadaver smell would point out that Madeleine is dead.

Can you provide a proof that Eddie ( which was trained to find both blood and cadaver smell) can distinguish between these two with a level of certainty?

Paulo Reis said...

What a big confusion inside your head! I'm stating nothing!!! I'm just quoting South Yorkshire police and several stories published in the British Media, about Eddie and Keela!!! You know those words in blue? If you put your mouse over it and click, you will go to sites from the British Press...

Meu caro FSoares,

Simplesmente, a investigação evoluiu e produziu outros resultados.

Obrigado pelas suas palavras simpáticas.

Caro Paulo
Bom texto.

Very Well written Paulo !

Iain your comment also gives me hope that people arent all brainwashed by the British media and can and do filter out and look for the truths behind the reporting.

Im a British subject but reside in Australia we dont recieve much regarding this case over here which Im grateful for, as it makes me research the facts reported in the paper . I love this site because it generally can say in print what Im thinking.

I did research the dogs and their credentials Keely especially is a amazing dog and earns more than a chief inspecter per year .!!!!!

Is it little wonder Kate McCann freaked out at the video regarding keely and requested suspect status. (Certainly not the actions of a woman who wants to help find her child and will help in eve
ry way).
I think the fact that they immediatly contacted legal counsel in the USA from a lawyer who has dealt with cadaver dogs says volumes to me. Or am I the only one ?

Keep up the great reporting and editing Paulo .

And on a lighter note . Your Prime Minister is so cute lol.

Cheers

The Sunday Mirror should be deeply ashamed of the role they have played in this investigation.

No other player, except perhaps the McCanns, have wasted so much police time.

Tinkerbelle said...

Is it Pinto Monteiro or Pinto Ribiero?

Paulo Reis said...

Monteiro... Sorry, my mistake!!!

Tinkerbelle said...

So...is Alipio Ribiero
the guy on the end and is his name really Alipio Ribiero? I'm a little confused now.

Paulo Reis said...

Thinkerbelle,

It's the head of the Public Prosecutor's Service, Mr. Pinto MONTEIRO and the director of Policia Judiciária, Mr. Alípio RIBEIRO.

Tinkerbelle said...

Do you know who is the
chief of police is in Lagos
and Portimao? And Praia de Luz doesn't have police right?

Your saying you're sorry is
making me very nervous.

Paulo Reis said...

Thinkerbelle,

Strange, you are so nervous.. When you make a mistake, you don't say "sorry"? I just made a mistake and called mr. Pinto MONTEIRO, the head of Public Prosecutor's Srvice, Pinto RIBEIRO...

When you ask me about the name of the chief of Police in Lagos and Portimão you mean:

- the head of PJ DIC (Department of Criminal Investigation)?
- the chief of PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública), the regular urban beat Police?
- the commander of GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana), the rural regular beat Police?

When you refer to Lagos and Portimão, you mean:

- the city?
- the "Concelho" (administrative division that includes the city and a large area, with a few hundred small villages)?

Praia da Luz has police. You can check that with thousands and thousands of British tourist. But the police that patrolls Praia da Luz belongs to the GNR precinct of Lagos, 5 miles from Praia da Luz. They have cars and they patroll the villages 24 hours a day..

If you are so kind to clarify exactly what is your request, about who is chief of what, I'll be able to answer in a few minutes...

Tinkerbelle said...

Well this website

http://www.luzholiday.com/Portugal05.htm#General_Services

says "none based in Luz."

I mean the head/chief/ of all the
police in Portimao and the head of all the police in
Lagos.

How come I have to be super specific and you get to keep making mistakes?
(i.e. Tinkerbelle not Thinkerbelle)

And you're welcome by the way.

Paulo Reis said...

God! I did another mistake??? Oh! I wrote "Thinkerbelle" instaed of "Tinkerbelle"? Oh, my God! I'm finished as a journalist!!!

Paulo Reis said...

Tinkerbelle,

In the Portuguese police system, the country is divided in two areas: onde, in charge of PSP (Urban areas) the other, in charge of GNR (rural areas). Lagos (the city) is in charge of PSP but there is a GNR precinct in Lagos which is in charge of several rural areas of the Concelho of Lagos (Praia da Luz included). Portimão (the city) is in charge of PSP, but several rural areas of the COncelho of Portimão are in charge of GNR.

GNR - Lagos
http://www.visitalgarve.pt/visitalgarve/vPT/GuiaServicos/Detail/?equipamento_id=1760

PSP - Lagos
http://www.visitalgarve.pt/visitalgarve/vPT/GuiaServicos/Detail/?equipamento_id=1744

PSP and GNR are regular police, which has no competence to investigate a crime. Whenever they face a crime situation, they must call Polícia Judiciária to take charge of the investigation.

There is no such thing as a chief of all police in Portimão. There is PSP, and there is a local unit od DIC from PJ. PSP police chief of Portimão has no authority over PJ but they cooperate following legal rules.

PSP precinct of Faro oversees other precincts in Algarve:
http://www.psp.pt/psp/onde_estamos/faro.html

Phone number of PSP in Portimão: (00351)282417510

Oh, and this is not a carachteristic of our "keystones cops", as the British Press wrote. This the same organization they have in France, Spain, Belgium and several other european countires - you know, that part of the world that exists on the other side of the sea...

Paulo Reis said...

Thinkerbelle,

I'm very sorry, my sincere appologies, but in Portugal, we didn't copied the "perfect" police system of UK, with indepedent Police forces for each administrative area...

By the way - and I ask this because Mr. Mark Williams-Thomas, crime expert for Sky News and managing-director of WT Associates, proposed it:

WHAT WAS THE LAST TIME A BRITISH POLICE FORCE CALLED A FOREIGN POLICE FORCE TO MAKE AN INDEPENDENT REVIEW OF A CRIME INVESTIGATION?

Paulo Reis

Paulo Reis said...

Tinkerbell,

No, there is no Police precinct at Praia da Luz. There is a police precinct 5 MILES FROM PARAIA DA LUZ.

Just like there is no Police precinct in thousands of British small villages...

Paulo Reis said...

Thinkkerbelle,

Could you ACCEPT THE IDEA that Portugal, as a SOVEREIGN COUNTRY, has the right to decide what kind of Police system we ant to have?

Thank you, you are very generous...

Tinkerbelle said...

Why didn't you post my
message that I sent you
in Portuguese?

Don't you want your readers
to know that I can speak Portuguese (admittedly not very well) and can also
read and write some of it too?

When did I say that Portugal doesn't have rights as a sovereign country?
